Caliber Description

The 6.5 Grendel was developed in the early 2000s by Bill Alexander of Alexander Arms in collaboration with Arne Brennan and Janne Pohjoispää. Designed to fill the gap between the 5.56 NATO and 7.62 NATO cartridges, the 6.5 Grendel was engineered primarily for the AR-15 rifle platform. Its objective was to deliver superior long-range performance and terminal ballistics while maintaining manageable recoil. The cartridge made its commercial debut in 2003 and quickly garnered attention among precision shooters and hunters. It is based on the Soviet 7.62x39mm case, which was necked down to accept a 6.5mm bullet, allowing for impressive ballistic efficiency and energy retention at extended ranges.

Today, the 6.5 Grendel has found its niche within both sporting and tactical communities. Its compatibility with standard AR-15 lowers and modified bolts and magazines means that shooters can enjoy enhanced accuracy and range without moving to larger, heavier platforms. The Grendel shines in target shooting, competitive long-range matches, home defense setups, and even military and law enforcement trials. For reloaders, it offers a unique balance of velocity, energy, and manageable pressures, making it a compelling choice for custom ammunition tailored to individual preferences or specific shooting disciplines. Its efficient case design contributes to longer barrel life compared to some other calibers in the same velocity bracket, adding further appeal for high-volume shooters.

When it comes to hunting applications, the 6.5 Grendel is exceptionally versatile. Its flat trajectory and maintained energy at distance make it well suited for hunting a variety of game. Whitetail deer, antelope, wild hogs, and similarly sized animals are commonly targeted with this round thanks to its reliable penetration and expansion. The cartridge is also capable of ethically harvesting larger game such as feral hogs at moderate distances, making it a practical choice for hunters seeking a do-it-all cartridge in AR-15-sized frames. However, it is generally considered underpowered for big game like elk or moose unless shot placement is perfect and distances are short.

For ammunition reloaders, the 6.5 Grendel offers a wide range of bullet weights and profiles, leading to extensive load development possibilities. Typical factory and handloaded bullets range from about 90 grains up to 130 grains, with the most popular weight class being 120 to 123 grains for long-range target work. Bullets on the lighter end, such as 90–100 grains, are often used for varmints or high-velocity applications, while heavier 129–130 grain bullets offer maximized section density and ballistic coefficient for extended range and deeper penetration on medium-sized game. The cartridge operates at a maximum pressure of around 52,000 psi, which balances velocity and case life well for reloaders. Standard loads push a 123-grain bullet to approximately 2,400–2,500 fps coming out of a 20-inch barrel, giving reliable performance out to and beyond 600 yards. With its solid range of component options and user-friendly characteristics, the 6.5 Grendel remains an attractive and highly versatile caliber for ammunition reloaders.

Cost per Reloaded Round

Let's estimate the per-round cost of reloading 6.5 Grendel versus buying factory ammo, using average 2024 US prices:

Factory ammunition:
- Typical price: $1.20 to $2.00 per round for 6.5 Grendel
- Let's use a midpoint: $1.60 per round

Reloading components (per round):
- Brass case (Starline, Lapua): $0.80 each new, but can be reused at least 5 times — $0.16 per firing
- Primer (CCI, Federal): about $0.08 each
- Powder (using 28 grains, ~250 rounds per pound, $40/pound): $0.16 per round
- Bullet (123gr Hornady ELD-M/BTHP): about $0.30 each

Total reloading cost per round:
Brass: $0.16
Primer: $0.08
Powder: $0.16
Bullet: $0.30
Total: $0.70 per round

Savings per round:
Factory: $1.60
Reloaded: $0.70
$1.60 - $0.70 = $0.90 saved per round

If you already have reusable brass (such as picking up your own or once-fired), the savings increase, as brass cost per load drops further.

Therefore, you save about 90 cents per round by reloading 6.5 Grendel instead of buying factory ammunition.
