Caliber Description

The 6.5 PRC (Precision Rifle Cartridge) is a relatively new addition to the family of 6.5mm cartridges, officially introduced by Hornady in 2018. Born from the need for a modern, high-performance 6.5mm caliber for long-range shooting and hunting, the 6.5 PRC traces its roots to the desire for something faster and more capable than the popular 6.5 Creedmoor. Its design is based on the .300 Ruger Compact Magnum (RCM) case, which was necked down to accept 6.5mm bullets, resulting in increased case capacity and higher velocities. The 6.5 PRC quickly gained a following among competitive shooters and hunters, especially those looking for a balance between recoil, downrange energy, and flat trajectories. For reloaders, it represents an evolution in cartridge efficiency, offering performance closer to magnum cartridges without the associated drawbacks.

The primary application for the 6.5 PRC is in precision long-range rifle shooting, where consistent accuracy and manageable recoil are critical. Its high ballistic coefficients and efficient case design make it a favorite in both tactical and competitive shooting circles, such as PRS (Precision Rifle Series) matches. The 6.5 PRC also excels in hunting; its flat trajectory and retained energy at long distances make it suitable for taking game across varied terrain. Reloaders appreciate its case-to-powder ratio, which promotes excellent barrel life and strong accuracy potential. The cartridge works well with bolt-action rifles, offering impressive velocities without the throat erosion commonly associated with overbore magnum cartridges.

When it comes to target species, the 6.5 PRC is widely recognized as an extremely versatile hunting round. It is particularly effective on medium-sized game such as deer, antelope, and wild boar, thanks to its ability to deliver high energy and reliable terminal performance at longer ranges. With heavier bullet weights, it can also be employed for bigger game such as elk and even moose, provided ethical shot placement. Since the 6.5mm projectiles offer excellent sectional density and tend to retain weight well, hunters can count on deep penetration and consistent expansion. For reloaders targeting specific game, the cartridge’s efficiency with a variety of bullet types—ranging from traditional soft points to modern monolithic and bonded designs—means it can be finely tuned to the pursuit at hand.

Typical bullet weights for the 6.5 PRC range from 120 to 156 grains, with the sweet spot for accuracy and performance occurring around 140 to 147 grains. Factory offerings often feature streamlined, high-BC projectiles such as Hornady’s ELD-M and ELD-X bullets, but handloaders enjoy even broader selection for tailoring custom loads. With a maximum case length of 2.030 inches and a standard overall cartridge length of 2.955 inches, the 6.5 PRC fits comfortably in standard short-action rifles but accommodates long, high-BC bullets without encroaching on case capacity. The cartridge typically achieves muzzle velocities between 2,900 and 3,100 feet per second depending on bullet weight and powder choice, surpassing the 6.5 Creedmoor by approximately 200-300 fps. This extra speed translates to flatter trajectories and reduced wind drift, highly valued by long-range shooters. With its manageable recoil, reloaders can pursue high-volume practice or competition without excessive shooter fatigue, making the 6.5 PRC a modern favorite for both precision and hunting enthusiasts.

Cost per Reloaded Round

Factory-loaded 6.5 PRC ammunition typically costs about $3.00 to $4.00 per round. Reloading costs per round approximately break down as follows (approximate 2024 prices in the US):

- Bullet: $0.40 (ELD or similar)
- Powder: $0.20 (about 50 grains from a $40/lb can, 140 rounds per pound)
- Primer: $0.10 each
- Brass: If reused 5 times, $1.00/5 = $0.20 per reuse

Total per reloaded round: $0.40 (bullet) + $0.20 (powder) + $0.10 (primer) + $0.20 (brass) = $0.90

Factory ammo average: $3.50
Reload: $0.90
Savings per round: $3.50 - $0.90 = $2.60
