The 6.5 PRC (Precision Rifle Cartridge) is a relatively new addition to the family of 6.5mm cartridges, officially introduced by Hornady in 2018. Born from the need for a modern, high-performance 6.5mm caliber for long-range shooting and hunting, the 6.5 PRC traces its roots to the desire for something faster and more capable than the popular 6.5 Creedmoor. Its design is based on the .300 Ruger Compact Magnum (RCM) case, which was necked down to accept 6.5mm bullets, resulting in increased case capacity and higher velocities. The 6.5 PRC quickly gained a following among competitive shooters and hunters, especially those looking for a balance between recoil, downrange energy, and flat trajectories. For reloaders, it represents an evolution in cartridge efficiency, offering performance closer to magnum cartridges without the associated drawbacks.

The primary application for the 6.5 PRC is in precision long-range rifle shooting, where consistent accuracy and manageable recoil are critical.
